Project: Sydney Superdome
Homebush Bay, Sydney, NSW, Australia

The Sydney Superdome was constructed as part of the Olympic Games Complex for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.  It is the largest indoor live entertainment and sporting arena in Australia.  The roof structure for the building was fabricated by ABB Engineering Construction.  A number of the members of the ABB team responsible for this work are now engaged by the KLJ Consulting Group.

The arched roof comprises 1,235 tonnes of structural steel with a span of 140 meters by 100 meters.  The roof was constructed in nine segments which were lifted into place using a temporary support structure.  These segments were fitted out prior to lifting into position.  Infill sections were then completed.  The roof structure is supported by a stressed cable system which was tensioned prior to removal of the temporary support structure.

During the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the Superdome was utilised to host events including artistic gymnastics, trampoline and basketball.
